Animal testing has been around since the late 18th century. Each year over 150 million cats and dogs are born in the united states. Nearly 17 million cats and dogs are placed in shelters. Most dogs and cats that are used were taken out of their human societies for animal testing. It is estimated the near 20 million animals worldwide are used for animal testing each year. 94% of the animals are used for cosmetic testing and medical testing. The other 5% are used for other projects. 10% of the animals that are used do now get adequate pain killers while they are testing products. 50% of animals used in cosmetic animal testing die within 2 to 3 weeks after being used for testing. It is said that 61% of the animals used in research suffer no pain, 6% of the animals tested on do experience pain. Some types of animals that are used in animal testing are; pigs, dogs, cats, monkeys, fish, guinea pigs, mice, rabbits, and hamsters. Most of the research is conducted on rodents such as rats or mice. Rodents constitute 85-90% of the research animals There are many things that animal testing is used for. Some of it is used for testing to see that the cosmetics and medicine isn’t toxic and won't hurt humans. Other is used to develop vaccinations for life threatning diseases. Some diseases that they have developed vaccinations for through animal testing include: Herpes Simplex, hepatitis b, polio, rabies, malaria, mumps, and other viruses. Animal testing not only happens in a lot of different states in the U.S but a lot of different countries outside the U.S also.
